2013 dodge dart review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A fixture at the entry end of the dodge lineup from 1960 through 1976, the dart was discontinued in 1977 and its badge went into mothballs, forgotten, but obviously not gone. Now it's been resuscitated, and affixed to this all-new line of compact sedans. so the name is the same, and the new 2013 dodge dart occupies the same position in the dodge passenger car hierarchy as the original. But the similarities end right there. The first car to incorporate engineering elements from corporate parent fiat, the revival dart is a contemporary front-drive compact facing a considerably stronger competitive environment than its 20th century namesake. Does it have the chops to be a compelling alternative to the chevy cruze, ford focus, honda civic, hyundai elantra, kia forte, nissan sentra, mazda 3, subaru impreza, toyota corolla, and vw jetta? the answer is a definite maybe. Although fundamental elements of its unitbody foundations were adapted from the alfa romeo giulietta, the snappy italian hatchback, they've been stretched to accommodate the sedan body style: longer wheelbase, longer overall, wider track, wider body. Epa fuel economy estimates range up to 41 mpg on the highway (for the yet-to-be-seen aero model). Suggested retail pricing for the five trim levels opens at $15,995 and climbs to $19,995 for the limited model. The sporty r/t version carries a $22,495 base price. demerits: just one. For all the emphasis on the weight-saving benefits of high-strength steel, the darts are a little pudgy by compact standards. Listed curb weights start at 3186 pounds for a dart 2. 0-liter with manual gearbox and go as high as 3348 pounds for a model equipped with the 2. 4-liter engine and automatic transmission. it might also be noted that the wide array of models and trim packages could pose an assembly quality challenge for the belvidere factory. A hint of forward-leaning rake, plus modest front and rear overhangs, suggests sportiness. The styling doesn't provoke many double-takes, however. the design team took great pains with aerodynamics. The shape evolved through extensive wind tunnel time, and thoughtful details include active grille shutters that close to restrict radiator airflow when cooling air isn't needed, to reduce aerodynamic drag. The underbody is fully enclosed, and a rear diffuser manages underbody airflow to enhance stability. the net of all the aero attention is a praiseworthy drag coefficient of 0. 285, enhancing fuel economy and also helping to minimize wind noise. dodge signature elements for its latest offering are a new interpretation of the division's crosshair grille, and a taillamp treatment, adapted from the dodge challenger, that spreads across the entire rear end, incorporating 152 leds. one other exterior note, that relates to the interior. At 183. 9 inches long, 72. 0 inches wide, and 57. 7 inches tall the new dart is one of the biggest of the current compact crop, and the designers have put those dimensions to work inside, creating one of the roomiest interiors (over 97 cubic feet) in this class. The 13. 1-cubic foot trunk can be expanded by folding the rear seatbacks forward. In the base model the seatback is one piece. In other trim levels it's a split-folding setup. interiorroominess is always a plus in a family sedan, but it's much more compelling when it's nicely appointed. Here, too, the dart scores well. Nothing inside these new cars looks cheap, even in the most basic model, and soft-touch surfaces abound, dashboard, door panels, center console and elsewhere. the basic cloth upholstery is attractive and looks durable, denim inserts are offered in the sxt trim level, and leather is an option in the top-of-the line limited model. The seats are long-haul comfortable, with enough lateral support to feel sporty. Like all sedans, the cabin is rated for five, and like all of them the center rear position will accommodate an adult occupant about as far as the end of the driveway before complaints begin to fill the air. Foremost on this list is an 8. 4-inch touch-screen display, dominating the center dash of the higher trim levels (not available on the base dart). A nav system is offered for the limited model, as well as a configurable electronic instrument package and an led-powered light pipe surround for the entire instrument panel, which some may like, while others may find a bit garish. like other carmakers, chrysler has taken notice of the success of ford's sync infotainment system and responded with one of its own, called u-connect. This appellation is a little difficult to fathom with the basic 2. 0-liter version, which doesn't feel very tigerish, particularly mated with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission. Its 160-horsepower rating is the same as that of the 2. 0-liter, but it generates more torque, 184 pound-feet versus 148. The trick with this engine is keeping it in the sweet spot of. The challenger harkens back to 1970, and the current generation, launched as a 2008 model, amuses and delights us. Its 3. 6-liter pentastar v6 produces 305 horsepower and 268 foot-pounds of torque. But the challenger is a big car, so even with a 5-speed automatic fuel economy is not its forte: challenger is epa rated 18/27 mpg city/highway. the challenger r/t rumbles with a 5. 7-liter hemi v8. The v8 is rated at 372 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque with the 5-speed automatic, or 375 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque with the standard 6-speed manual. The hemi uses a multiple displacement feature that switches off cylinders to save fuel, but epa ratings are no better than 16/25 mpg. We think the challenger r/t is a sweet spot in the lineup. It can be used as a daily driver with less intensity than the srt8 (and considerable cost savings) yet it's sportier and more fun than the sxt. Challenger r/t is often compared with the mustang gt and camaro ss, although challenger is a bigger car and a more comfortable cruiser. the challenger srt8 392 is named after its hemi v8's cubic-inch displacement (even though it's actually 391) and that of the legendary hemi 392 engine of the late 1950s. The 2013 challenger srt8 392 comes with a 470-hp 6. 4-liter hemi v8 that also uses cylinder deactivation technology. Epa ratings are 14/23 mpg. Additional features include a heated steering wheel, three-mode adaptive damping and launch control. The srt8 also comes with big brembo brakes, the firmest suspension and a limited-slip rear differential. We found the srt8 392 fast and stable. Everyone seems to like the challenger. We've driven all the models and like all of them. They all have their own merits but there are distinctions. the cabin is mundane. Like muscle cars of the past, the challenger is based on a sedan (the charger) and the interior borrows heavily from existing materials. It is unanimously praised by on-lookers as a cool-looking car and is as faithful to the original as has been done in recent years. part of the challenger's appeal comes from its commanding presence. Many of the challenger's parts, systems and structures are shared with the chrysler 300 and dodge charger sedans. It's a big car, just two inches shorter than the charger but wider and lower. The challenger is also about nine inches longer than the ford mustang, and seven inches longer than the chevrolet camaro. unlike most new cars, the maximum width is carried well out to the ends resulting in a broad, menacing car. The very wide, horizontal grille, spoilers and taillamps accentuate the width, as does a turret-like roof and window treatment, and the haunches over the rear wheels where the roof fairs into the trunk and the character line kicks up. The proportions all seem just right, from the carrier-deck expanse of flat hood larger than most modern pickups, to the foot-high side glass and dark lower body trim, and into the massive rear roof pillars. the major lines are only part of the equation, with details just as well executed. Where signals rode below the bumper on the '70 this one has fog lamps, and careful sculpting has maintained the classic look without destroying aerodynamic efficiency. from the side, the srt8 392's 20-inch wheels frame bright red brake calipers and slotted discs, filling large fender openings that are creased along the edges. Hood scoops carry hemi badges on v8 cars and are functional in that cool air goes in or warm air vents to the atmosphere, but they do not feed cold air straight into the engine; the ducts in the spoiler direct cooling air to the front brakes and small winglets at the front wheel openings better refine airflow. The fixed side rear windows do not allow the full open hardtop of the original with its frameless doors but in a nod to that look dodge kept the pillars behind the glass so they aren't so obvious. A bright fuel filler cap finishes off the driver's side. The door handles look retro and stylish, but we found them hard to grab. out back, there is a full-width panel of red lights with a pair of backup lights wedged in the middle, along with chrome dodge lettering in a font right out of the 1970s. While only the outer pairs of bulbs light for brake and turn functions, the entire width is used for taillights. All models have dual chrome rectangular exhaust outlets in the lower bumper. paintwork on the cars we saw was very good, as it must be, given the vast surfaces lacking any ornamentation or style lines. The paint feels smooth to the touch and looks great. But, at least in v8 form, the challenger is a muscle car that many insist requires stripes, so plenty of wallpaper is optional. interiorthe interior harkens back to the muscle car.

Add in 111,744 sales for the 2012 chrysler town & country, the grand caravan's mechanically similar but decidedly up-market cousin, and the resulting quarter-million minivans account for nearly half the entire u. According to dodge, that makes the 2013 grand caravan the most affordable seven-passenger vehicle currently on sale in the u. S. yet despite its low price, the grand caravan keeps acquiring attractive new features. For example, integrated trailer sway damping is now standard on all 2013 grand caravan models. A second-row bench seat is now standard on 2013 grand caravan base models, increasing versatility. And a new, industry-exclusive dual-screen blu-ray video system is now offered on 2013 grand caravan crew and 2013 grand caravan r/t models. dodge grand caravan is a top safety pick by the insurance industry for highway safety, the insurance industry's lobbying outfit. the basic design of the current-generation grand caravan has been around since 2008, but it still looks fresh and crisp, especially next to some of the more forced and gimmicky styling we've seen on newer import-brand vans. Substantial interior and mechanical revisions back in the 2011 model year updated the grand caravan and have kept it more than competitive in its segment. grand caravan rides lower and more firmly than minivans did a few years ago, making it more responsive to driver inputs. Long gone are the annoying wallow and float once characteristic of the breed. Yet ride quality is quite smooth. Like all modern minivans, the grand caravan is big, so it can be a beast to handle in tight quarters. The grand caravan, toyota sienna, nissan quest and honda odyssey are all roughly the same size: extra large. We should call these vehicles midi-vans or, simply, vans because there is nothing mini about them. power is provided by the relatively new 3. 6-liter v6 that is rapidly becoming ubiquitous in chrysler group products. Unfortunately, it's still mated to a mediocre 6-speed automatic transmission, resulting in a combination that delivers barely adequate response for most drivers. we found the interior of the grand caravan attractive, though, as in most of its rivals, hard plastic dominates the dashboard. Still, the soft-touch door tops, boldly contemporary gauges and some nice bits of trim are welcome. grand caravan is about usable space. Super stow 'n go is standard on all but the base model, and optional there. The third-row seats fold into the well behind them, and with all the seats down the grand caravan can accept a 4x8 sheet of plywood. grand caravan's entertainment features make it a strong contender in the minivan class. Families will like it, especially because those entertainment features will make for more enjoyable family trips. That is, after all, the reason the grand caravan remains so popular. They include a variety of hard-drive radios, siriusxm satellite radio, rear dvd or blu-ray entertainment, a wireless cell phone link, and a mobile internet hot spot. lineupthe 2013 dodge grand caravan is offered in five models: avp, se, sxt, crew, and r/t. All come with a 283-hp 3. 6-liter v6 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. avp stands for american value package. It's distinguished by body-color grille trim and satin carbon alloy wheels. It loses the roof rack. option packages include a driver's convenience group 795) with heated front and second-row seats, heated steering wheel, usb port, uconnect with voice command, bluetooth streaming audio and cell phone link, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and second and third-row window shades; uconnect hands free group 690) with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, sirius satellite radio, uconnect phone, voice recognition, and auto-dimming rearview mirror; entertainment group 1 with a single-screen rear dvd entertainment system, sirius satellite radio, 40gb hdd, rearview camera, and 115v outlet; security group 395) with remote engine starting and an alarm; and a trailer tow group 995) with heavy-duty engine cooling, load-leveling rear suspension, and a trailer wiring harness. Options include a rearview camera, rear park assist, rear cross path and blind spot alert. All-wheel drive is not available. walkaroundthe 2013 dodge grand caravan is attractive, as minivans go. The look is crisp and tidy, but not boxy, with just a touch of sportiness. Unlike some of its competitors, the grand caravan neither blends in with the scenery, nor leaps out of it, screaming. up front is a curvy, almost car-like fascia with mesh inserts above and below the main bumper. Filling the upper grille are the trademark dodge crosshairs, finished in matte black with a chrome outline; except on the r/t, where the chrome parts are replaced with body color. rear-end styling is more clever than conspicuous; on each side the rear roof pillar unites with the taillight cluster to form a single surface, which then bulges out just slightly to become the rear bumper and step plate before retreating back up to the roof via the taillight on the opposite side of the van. Recessed into this gentle u-shape is a subtly convex liftgate integrating a body-color roof spoiler. sixteen-inch wheels are standard, although dodge has promised 17-inch steel wheels by mid-year. We think the available five-spoke 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels look better. still, a minivan shape does not lend itself to artistic sculpture. A description of the overall shape of this current generation of the dodge grand caravan wouldn't sound too much different from a description of the 1984 model. There is a big box behind, where all the people and cargo fit, and a smaller box in front, for the engine. That very efficient outline defines every minivan on the road. all the leading minivans, including toyota sienna, honda odyssey, nissan quest and chrysler town & country, measure within an inch or two of the grand caravan in overall dimensions. They're all big, and with a 202. 8-inch overall length and a 121. 2-inch wheelbase, the chrysler vans are the biggest of the bunch. these so-called minivans are quite large. However, they share their basic architecture with cars, using unit-body structures and front-wheel drive platforms, with the engine mounted transversely. Conversely, full-size vans, such as the chevrolet express, are built on truck platforms, with body-on-frame structures, rear-wheel-drive platforms and giant, longitudinally mounted v8 engines. Minivans are lighter, more fuel-efficient and offer more responsive handling than the full-size vans. interiorgrand caravan boasts a rich and inviting interior, characterized by strong, decisive lines and shapes and.
